Requirements for masonry reinforcement (Eurocode 6)

Masonry protection:
Eurocode 6 clearly defines the type of protection for the masonry reinforcement depending on the type of environmental exposure:
Dry environment (interior) reinforcement with a zinc coating.
Moist environment (exterior) reinforcement with an organic coating.
Aggressive environment (marine) stainless steel masonry reinforcement.

WHAT TYPES OF PROTECTION DOES THE REINFORCEMENT HAVE AGAINST CORROSION DO I HAVE TO CHOOSE FROM?

Minimum mortar coverings:
Eurocode 6 states the minimum mortar covering that should be provided above and below the masonry reinforcement.

A: The masonry reinforcement fisufor® will be placed centered on the structure leaving a minimum of 15 mm coating of mortar between the longitudinal wire and the outer edge of the joint.

B: The thickness of mortar above and below the masonry reinforcement shall be at least 5 mm.

Overlap:
The application of European standards about truss type masonry reinforcement (that has a distance between junctions of 400mm) leads to a minimum overlapping of 250mm.

According to European standards the horizontal separation between longitudinal wires of overlapped masonry reinforcement should be equal to or greater than 20mm.

HOW TO EXECUTE A CORRECT OVERLAP?

Choice of reinforcement depending on wall thickness:
The width of the reinforcement has a key role because when you increase the mechanical arm it increases at the same rate as the ability of horizontal flexion resistance of the walls.

You should choose wider reinforcement that meets the minimum requirements for covering, taking into account that the lateral covering in areas of the overlap is essential so that there is the correct transmission of forces and this circumstance should be taken into account when choosing the width of the reinforcement.

All existing reinforcement on the market need manipulation (cutting of wires to run a proper overlap) to comply with all these requirements, being impossible to verify whether the execution is correct or not once the wall has been constructed.

The only reinforcement that meets all these requirements without manipulation (special geometric ends enables the possibility of a proper overlap without manipulation) and that allows you to check the reinforcement is properly placed (SAO devices) once constructed in the wall is GEOFOR® reinforcement.
